Seiun (星雲 - "Nebula") by Yamamasa Koyamaen is an intense, velvety koicha-grade ceremonial matcha that delivers full-bodied umami with robust creaminess and natural sweetness—a premium blend crafted for discerning matcha enthusiasts seeking depth and sophistication. Named after the Japanese word for "nebula," which beautifully merges "star" and "cloud" into one celestial concept, this matcha embodies the harmonious union of contrasting elements: intense yet smooth, robust yet sweet, traditional yet versatile.

Founded during the Edo era, Yamamasa Koyamaen is a prestigious tea house with over 300 years of heritage that still owns and cultivates the same tea gardens in Uji as their ancestors did centuries ago. Their matcha specialists treat tea-making as an art form, prioritizing the finest raw ingredients and meticulous cultivation techniques to achieve perfect taste. Yamamasa Koyamaen's motto is simple yet profound: to deliver fine tea with harmonious, fresh flavor that honors tradition while serving modern tea lovers.

Seiun showcases intensive, creamy flavors with toasted seed aromas and a characteristic, lingering aftertaste. While it shines brightest as koicha (thick tea), revealing its full complexity and velvety texture, it also performs beautifully as usucha (thin tea) with intensive creaminess. This lighter, sweeter profile compared to Yamamasa Koyamaen's Tennozan makes it an approachable yet premium choice for both traditional tea ceremonies and elevated daily rituals.

About this matcha:

  • Koicha Grade Excellence: Specifically crafted for thick tea preparation—intense, velvety, full-bodied character with robust creaminess and natural sweetness.
  • Toasted Seed Aromas: Distinctive lingering aftertaste with toasted seed notes—a characteristic depth that sets this matcha apart from lighter blends.
  • Versatile Premium: Shines as koicha where its fullness is revealed, yet also delivers intensive, creamy flavors as usucha—adaptable to your preference.
  • Lighter & Sweeter: More approachable than Tennozan—perfect for those seeking premium quality with balanced sweetness rather than extreme intensity.
  • Vibrant Green Color: Vivid jade-green hue reflects the quality of carefully selected tencha leaves and meticulous stone-grinding process.
  • Harmonious Balance: Deep umami harmonizes with gentle sweetness and smooth texture—a sophisticated flavor profile that exemplifies Yamamasa Koyamaen's dedication to taste.
  • Named by Tea Masters: All Yamamasa Koyamaen matcha names are bestowed by masters of famous tea schools—a tradition that honors centuries of tea ceremony culture.
  • Complete Quality Control: From cultivation to grinding, Yamamasa Koyamaen handles every stage in-house using traditional techniques passed down through generations.
  • Limited Availability: Due to the exclusive nature and limited production of this premium koicha-grade matcha, availability may be restricted.
  • 300-Year Heritage: From the same Uji tea gardens cultivated since the Edo era—a direct connection to Japan's golden age of tea culture.
  • 100% Uji Origin: Shade-grown, carefully selected, and stone-ground in Uji, Kyoto—the birthplace of Japan's finest matcha.

Step 1: Sift 3g (0.11 oz) of matcha (2 heaping tea ladles or 1.5 level teaspoons.)

Step 2: Pour boiling water into a teacup to cool it to 80°C (176°F), then pour 100 ml (2 oz) into tea bowl.

Step 3: Whisk vigorously 15 seconds, making an "M" shape.

Step 4: Add 100 ml (3.4 oz) of warmed or foamed milk into mug.

Usucha (thin tea)

The standard matcha whisking method, made to be a normal, liquid consistency.

Step 1: Sift 2g (0.07 oz) of matcha (1.5 heaped tea ladles or 1 level teaspoon.)

Step 2: Pour boiling water into a teacup to cool it to 80°C (176°F), then pour 60 ml (2 oz) into tea bowl.

Step 3: Whisk vigorously 15 seconds, making an "M" shape.

Step 1: Sift 4 g (0.14 oz) of matcha (3 heaping tea ladles or 2 level teaspoons.)

Step 2: Cool boiling water to 80°C (176°F) in teacup, then pour 30 ml (1 oz) into bowl, just covering matcha powder.
