An Important Update on Matcha Pricing and Availability

We’d like to take a moment to share an important update about matcha pricing and availability. Beginning this fall, you may notice some changes in the prices and formats of certain matcha blends from Ippodo Tea and other esteemed producers in Japan.

The Current State of Matcha

The Japanese tea industry is currently facing unprecedented challenges. Demand for high-quality matcha has grown rapidly worldwide, but supply remains limited due to the long and careful process required to cultivate and produce tencha (the leaf used for matcha). From planting to harvest, it takes at least five years before the leaves are ready to be enjoyed.

In recent months:

  • Market prices for matcha in Kyoto have risen to over double last year’s levels, driven by both increased demand and limited supply.

  • Many tea growers have shifted production toward matcha, which has also raised the cost of other Japanese teas across the board.

  • New tariffs and rising import costs have added further pressure on prices in the U.S. Starting August 29, 2025, all U.S.-bound shipments will be subject to customs clearance, including a Reciprocal Tariff of 15% applied to Japanese matcha and a Disbursement Fee of $17 or 2% (whichever is higher) charged by the shipping carrier.

As a result, producers like Ippodo Tea, Marukyu Koyamaen, Horii Shichimeien, and Nakamura Tokichi are revising their prices globally. On average, matcha blends will see increases of around 50–70%, depending on the variety.

Upcoming Changes in Matcha Packaging

Beginning this fall, Ippodo is streamlining its packaging to meet current challenges in the Japanese tea industry and focus on core blends. Here’s what’s changing:

  • Most matcha varieties will move exclusively to a 20g box format. Previous 40g and 30g tins or boxes will be discontinued for all except a few select blends.

  • Only Kanza and Kuon will continue in a 20g can.

  • Sayaka and Ikuyo will also be available in a larger 100g bag for daily use, in limited stock.

  • New Harvest Matcha 2025 in a 20g can format will remain available through the end of the season.

We will continue to offer existing formats (such as 40g tins or 20g tins) while current inventory lasts. Once sold out, only the new formats will be available.

Because of ongoing global demand, some blends may periodically sell out or be available in limited quantities. We’ll continue to share updates and encourage you to sign up for restock notifications.

Our Pricing Revision

Because of these shifts in Japan and the added costs of importing to the U.S., we will also be adjusting our own pricing. This change will affect both current and future inventory, as we must align with new market realities. On average, you can expect to see a price increase of approximately 15–40%, depending on the blend and grade.

Looking Forward Together

We know price increases are never welcome news, especially for products you love and depend on. We've absorbed as much of the market increase as possible, but these adjustments are necessary to maintain the exceptional quality and authenticity that define your matcha experience.

At the same time, we’re committed to keeping matcha accessible. In addition to carrying celebrated brands, we are also expanding our curation to include lesser-known but equally authentic Japanese tea producers.

These smaller, regional brands often craft remarkable blends at more approachable price points. By introducing them alongside our flagship offerings, we hope to give you more choice — whether you’re looking for a rare, premium blend for special occasions or a dependable everyday matcha that balances quality and value.

Thank You for Your Support

We’re deeply grateful for your continued trust and understanding as we navigate these market changes together. Our mission remains unchanged: to offer the most authentic and carefully curated matcha from Japan, delivered fresh to you in the U.S.
